Thursday has always been my favorite day of the week. When I was a teen in school, it was the day before Friday and the weekend’s prospects of adventure and fun. As an adult, I have had Thursday off for several years on most weeks. Unfortunately, today is one of those working Thursday.
Going back to the “forward looking” aspect of Thursday, it reminds me that a great vacation has three components:
1. The planning stage–for some vacations, this could last months, even years, and for spur of the moment trips, perhaps just a few nanoseconds. As I gain experience, I like to spend a lot of time planning vacations, researching places and activities, restaurants and hotels, history and culture. My most recent vacation was planned over a nine month span, and I enjoyed every minute! A great vacation plan is like a string of my Thursdays!
2. The execution–no, not a bloody mess with heads and guillotines and such, but the actual vacation. Being there, in the moment, enjoying, learning, and discovering, using all five senses, feeling alive.
3. The recap–a great vacation will last a lifetime, viewing photos, telling stories, reading about places and times, and maybe even planning for the return, whether it be real plans or just fantasizing. A vacation is the gift that keeps on giving.
I plan to post a blog on every Thursday, and I hope that most are more substantive than this one. But if not, it’s probably because it is a working Thursday.
